Welcome to The Mt Torrens Inn
We are incredibly proud to introduce you to the next chapter of this beautiful, 170-year-old heritage site. As of July 2026, we have taken the keys to the property, and as part of our vision to honor its pioneer roots, we are officially renaming it The Mt Torrens Inn.
Taking on a property with such a deep connection to South Australia’s past is a privilege, and our journey is just getting started. Over the coming months, we will be rolling up our sleeves and diving into a meticulous renovation to restore this magnificent stone building to its authentic, 1800s glory.
Why “The Inn”?
In the 19th century, an “inn” was more than just a place to grab a pint; it was a vital sanctuary where weary travelers could rest, secure a hot meal, and safely stable their animals for the night. By bringing back the “Inn” title, we are reflecting our deep commitment to that traditional, all-encompassing country hospitality.
Saddle Up: Restoring the Original Stables
One of the projects we are most passionate about is breathing life back into the original 19th-century stables located out the back. We aren’t just preserving them as a museum display—we are restoring them to full working order.
Our vision is to create a true, old-world experience where locals and trail riders can trot right into town, safely stable their horses at the Inn, and step inside for a well-earned drink. We want to recreate the exact feeling that early settlers, stockmen, and travelers experienced when they arrived at these doors over a century ago.
A Nod to Our Pioneering Past
To appreciate where The Mt Torrens Inn is heading, it helps to look at where it all started.
Back in the early 1840s, a settler named George Dunn established a sheep station right here at the base of the mount. When copper was struck at nearby Reedy Creek in 1845, the quiet valley was suddenly flooded with miners and heavy bullock teams hauling ore. Recognizing that these hardworking travelers needed a place to rest, George opened a small tavern to service the route.
As traffic traveling between Adelaide and the River Murray exploded, the demand quickly outgrew the original tavern. In 1850, the doors opened to the grand, two-storey stone building that stands before you today. Through subsequent gold rushes, bustling trade eras, and eventually quieter decades that left the town perfectly preserved as a State Heritage Area, these walls have remained the central gathering place for the community.
Join Us on the Journey
As we peel back the modern additions to showcase the original, locally quarried stone and rustic pioneer charm, we are dedicated to honoring the people who built it. We want every guest to walk through our doors and feel the 1800s come alive.
Thank you for being part of our story. Keep an eye out for renovation updates, and get ready to experience the revived Mt Torrens Inn!
